Help! Painting the Foyer

October 25, 2010 · 52 comments

It’s been fun, but it’s time to move on.  We’ve enjoyed our time with our bright blue foyer in Southampton –it’s pretty, cheerful and energetic– but we’re not ready to settle down.  The blue was a great summer house color, but we’ve found that we love the place just as much in winter, and what seems refreshing in the summer heat can feel a little cold when the pool’s covered and there’s snow on the ground.  Or maybe we’re just growing tired of it.

Anyway, we’re not really sure where to go from here.  We’d like something warmer, but we’re having trouble settling on a direction.  What do you think?  I’d love your advice.  To give you some more perspective, here are some additional views of the space we’re working with:

Looking North, toward the corridor joining the guest room, mud room and kitchen

Looking South, toward the living room

From the second floor landing, looking down

From the top of the stairs, looking down

After some discussion and a couple of trips to the paint store, we’re narrowed our choices down to three completely different directions:  red/orange, yellow/ochre and bright olive, with the current leading contenders labeled 1 to 9 below.  Which, if any, do you prefer?

Of course, if you have other color suggestions, I’d love to hear about them.

Thanks for your help.  We’ll paint before Thanksgiving . . . .
