Little Evergreens

“Lil’ trees!” is what Julia said when she saw these on the kitchen counter.  Maybe it’s because I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but I’ve always loved the sight and scent of evergreens, and I’m eager to bring them indoors in the wintertime.

I bought these lil trees in the plant and flower district in Manhattan (28th Street, mostly between 6th and 7th Avenues) for about $8 each, and “planted” them in beautifully colored Portuguese latte bowls from Anthropologie (a bargain at $5 each, in stores or at www.anthropologie.com).  Similar evergreens are available now at garden centers, flower shops and even supermarkets.  They’re cheerful in the kitchen, and I think they’ll also make good host/hostess gifts for the Holiday season.

I think the bowls themselves would also make a welcome gift –perfect for caffe lattes, yoghurt, cereal and the like, and, before I turned them into seasonal decor, I enjoyed used them for my mise en place when I cooked.

They come in a wide range of great colors, but I thought this grouping had a nice slightly retro seasonal flair.
