It’s done! As promised, we painted the foyer before Thanksgiving. (But only just –we were removing the last of the masking tape the night before.)
Thank you to all of you who weighed in when I asked for help choosing a color. Your comments were very helpful. Those favoring the green swatches were in the clear majority, but the golden yellows were backed by several people with strong feelings about their choice. I tested several greens — from light olives to brighter, truer greens– but in context they all seemed dull and melancholy, mainly, I think, because of the lack of contrast to the large green rug in the adjacent living room. For the same reason, the reds were beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and not in a good way.
The golden yellows, however, were working. They were warm and welcoming, and provided enough contrast to the green living room rug and dark floors to feel lively as well. In the end, we chose a deep gold tending toward orange, “Yellow Marigold” from Benjamin Moore. In daylight it’s a cheerful saturated gold, and in the evening it takes on a mellower hue, more like a persimmon than a marigold. We love it.
What do you think?
