When I went to the market today, I thought I’d grab the bull by the horns and try to make a nice Valentine’s Day bouquet out of a dozen red roses. They’re not the most original gift (I got a weary look from the clerk when I checked out), and the special Valentine’s arrangements on display –with fern fronds and baby’s breath– could bore the hardest-core romantic to tears.
Still, an all-red bouquet can be a fun choice for this occasion where the usual rules of good taste seem suspended (which is probably part of the holiday’s appeal), so I though I’d spice it up a bit with some items from the produce section. For a red-on-red-on red look, I lined the clear vase with slices of red bell pepper, and placed bright red chillies on the ends of bamboo skewers among the roses.
It’s probably not an arrangement you’d give your grandmother, but it might make the right person smile.
