Yikes. That used to be our kitchen.
And that used to be a bedroom and a coat closet.
The change is dramatic and exciting, but it’s also a little unsettling to see how quickly the things that make a building seem like a home can be swept away, like striking the set after a play closes. Still, the project is going well, and I think the “bones” of the space are already starting to look better, in spite of the lack of flesh.
The too-low doorways and slick glass sliders are being removed to make way for their tall and handsome replacements.
The boxy soffits are being taken down, and the duct and sprinkler system is being rationalized and streamlined so that some of it can be exposed without looking messy.
And that oppressively orange floor finish has been sanded off to make way for . . . something. That bit of the project got a little more complicated than we thought, but it’s turning out well. More on that later.
This week we plan to finalize a basic color and materials palette, which, of course, I’ll share with you. I think it’s all coming together nicely, and it’s getting easier and easier to picture ourselves living there in spite of the apparent destruction.
