Things are moving very quickly now — which is a very good thing since our move-in date is just a few short weeks away. It seems impossible, but we’ve been assured that we’re actually running slightly ahead of schedule, and I’ve chosen to believe it. While I’ve been scrambling to finalize and source the last of the fixtures and finishes (more on that later), our contractor has made great progress with the basic construction.
All of the soffits are gone, the sprinkler heads and pipes have been moved to their new locations, and sleek new exposed spiral ductwork has been installed throughout the apartment. We’re planning to paint it the same white as the ceiling, but part of me wants to keep the more “honest” galvanized finish. Any thoughts on that?
All of the framing is done, including the new taller door openings. In the pictures below you can see an old door opening that’s being closed off next to a new taller one. To me the old ones now seem almost hobbity by comparison.
Removal of the drywall soffits also exposed original ironwork columns and beams, which I think are quite handsome and help bring the industrial history of the space into the interior. We’re going to leave them exposed and highlight them in the paint scheme. More on that later too.
Every day now seems to bring at last one important decision. Today’s is finalizing the placement of overhead lighting and stereo speakers, which is a bit of a puzzle given the steel beams, ductwork, sprinklers and at least two strong opinions in the room. Wish us luck.
