Sometimes it’s the little things –both that bring great satisfaction, and that drive you crazy.
Just inside the door of our New York loft is the entrance to our home office, and it’s there that anything we’re carrying –mail, packages, keys, glasses, phones, and our bags– tends to land. Mostly, this works as our desks are good places to sort though this stuff. But the bags –totes, brief cases, gym bags, the odd backpack– ended up on the floor. I just stepped around them, but this was a little thing drove David kind of crazy. (And, to be fair, there were days when our office looked more like the left luggage room at a small hotel than a place of business.)
I offered to make an effort to put our bags in the nearby coat closet, but David, who is very very good at organizing things, had a better idea. Putting the bags in the office wasn’t the problem, he reasoned, because it was there that we tended to pack and unpack them with things stored in our office. We just need to get those bags off the floor.
After a quick trip to the hardware store and a little drilling, our problem was solved. David installed three hooks just inside the door, and nobody’s tripped over any hand luggage since. He used chromed steel equipment hooks from Simon’s Hardware in New York, but any large coat hook would work. And there’s no need to find a stud (in the wall) –our toggle bolts in the drywall have held up well carrying some pretty heavy bags.
A little thing? Yes. But it makes a nice little contribution every day to domestic order –and harmony.
